The waste percentage is a claim about offcuts
Every flooring guide tells you to add 10 percent and none of them say what for. It is not breakage — modern LVP and laminate barely break. It is the ends of rows.
You lay a row across an 18 foot room with 48 inch planks. Four full planks take you to 16 feet, and the last plank is cut to 24 inches, leaving a 24 inch offcut. On a staggered install that offcut is exactly what you want to start the next row with, because starting a row with a partial plank is what creates the stagger. That is the good case, and it is why a plain rectangular room with a sensible plank length can genuinely run at 5 percent.
The waste appears when the offcut is unusable. Most manufacturers require a minimum stagger of 6 to 12 inches between end joints in adjacent rows, and a minimum plank length of about 8 inches for any piece you install. So an offcut shorter than 8 inches is scrap, and an offcut that would put an end joint too close to the one in the row beside it is also scrap for that row. Doorways, closets and returns generate cuts on both axes and almost none of those offcuts fit anywhere. That is the difference between 5 percent and 15.
Diagonal and herringbone break the reuse assumption entirely. On a 45 degree layout the perimeter planks are cut at an angle at both ends and the offcut is a parallelogram that fits only in the mirror position, which the room may or may not have. Herringbone cuts every single piece to a fixed length and the remainders are mostly scrap. Those are the numbers behind the seven and twelve points added here.
Working out the last row before you start
Take the room width across the planks, subtract a quarter inch of expansion gap at each wall, and divide by the plank face width. The remainder is the width of the final ripped row. With 7 inch planks in a 12 foot room that is 143.5 inches across, 20 full rows at 140 inches, and a last row 3.5 inches wide, which is fine. Change the plank to 7.5 inches and the same room gives 19 full rows and a last row of 1 inch, which is not.
The fix costs nothing if you do it first and is impossible once you have started: split the difference. Add the leftover to one full plank width and halve it, then rip your first row to that width. A 1 inch last row becomes a 4.25 inch first row and a 4.25 inch last row, both easy to install and visually balanced. Doing this requires knowing the number before the first plank is locked down, which is the only reason the figure is on this page.
Underlayment, expansion and the things that are not boxes
Underlayment gets a separate figure with no waste factor because it is laid in strips that butt and tape, not cut to a pattern — a 100 square foot roll does about 100 square feet. If your planks have an attached pad, do not add underlayment. A second layer of foam under an attached-pad product exceeds the compression the locking system is designed for, causes joint separation, and voids most warranties.
Expansion gap is not optional on a floating floor. A quarter inch at every vertical surface, including pipes, door jambs and the kitchen island, is typical, and long runs need more. The calculator subtracts a quarter inch at each side wall when working out the last row for exactly this reason. Transitions are needed at every doorway and at any run longer than the manufacturer's stated maximum without a break, commonly around 40 feet.
Acclimation, and the box you should not open
Nearly every manufacturer requires the flooring to sit in the room it will be installed in, in the boxes, for 24 to 72 hours before installation, so it reaches the temperature and humidity it will live at. Skipping this is the most common cause of gapping and cupping a few months later, and it is the first thing a warranty claim asks about. Order early enough that the boxes can sit.
Keep one unopened box at the end. Not an armful of offcuts — a sealed box from the same run. Plank flooring gets discontinued, reformulated and re-shaded on a schedule that has nothing to do with your house, and the day a dishwasher leaks onto four boards is the day you find out that the closest current match is a different product entirely. A spare box in the crawl space is worth more than the twenty dollars of resale value it will never have.
Questions people ask
How many boxes of flooring for a 12 by 15 room?
That is 180 square feet. At 8 percent waste you need 194.4 square feet, and with a typical 24 square foot box that is 8.1 boxes, so 9 boxes and 216 square feet bought. The rounding to whole boxes is doing more work here than the waste percentage — you end up 36 square feet over the bare floor, which is 20 percent, whether you asked for it or not. This is normal and is why the spare-box advice costs almost nothing: you were going to have most of a box left anyway.
Which direction should the planks run?
Along the longest dimension of the room is the usual default, because it produces fewer end joints and less cutting, and because it makes the room read longer. The stronger conventions override it: run planks perpendicular to the floor joists on a wood subfloor if the floor is nailed down, and run them along the main light source from a window if you want to minimise how visible the joints are. On a floating floor over a flat slab, none of the structural reasons apply and it is purely a look. Whichever you choose, decide before ordering, because it changes which room dimension sets the last-row width.
Can I count the offcuts from one room in the next room?
Partly, and less than you hope. Offcuts from row ends are the right length to start rows in an adjacent room, so doing several rooms in one continuous run genuinely reduces total waste — this is why whole-house installs run nearer 5 percent than 10. But the pieces have to be long enough to meet the minimum plank length, and they have to not create a stagger violation where they land. Plan the rooms as one job with one continuous run through the doorways where the layout allows, and you capture most of the saving. Do them a month apart and you capture none of it.
Does the calculator handle stairs?
No. Stairs are priced and cut per tread and riser, not by square footage, and they need stair nose profiles that are sold separately and cost several times what a plank does. Count treads and risers directly, add the matching stair nose for each tread, and treat that as its own line on the order. Trying to fold stairs into a square footage figure reliably under-orders both the material and the trim.
