Two answers, and the honest one is the bigger number

There are two ways to count sheets and they disagree. The area method divides the surface by 32 square feet and rounds up. The layout method asks how many whole sheets fit across the surface in a grid and multiplies. For a wall 24 feet long and 8 feet high the area method gives 192 divided by 32, which is exactly 6. The layout method also gives 6, because the wall happens to be three sheets long and one sheet high. Nice.

Now make the wall 25 feet long. The area is 200 square feet, so the area method says 6.25, rounded to 7. The layout method says four sheets across the length by one high, which is also 7 — but the seventh sheet is used for a single one-foot strip and you have 28 square feet of it left. Both methods say seven; only one of them tells you what you will be holding afterwards. That is what the offcut figure on this page is for.

Where the two methods genuinely diverge is on surfaces with an awkward second dimension. A 9 foot ceiling height means a 4x8 sheet leaves a one-foot strip on every course, and the grid count balloons while the area count barely moves. That is the case where you either order 4x9 stock or accept that a chunk of every sheet becomes filler.

Grain direction is the one that surprises people who have only done sheathing. On a plywood carcase, every side panel wants the face veneer running the same way, so a leftover strip that is the right size but the wrong orientation is firewood. If you are building casework, do a real cut list on paper or in an optimiser rather than trusting a percentage.

Sheet sizes and what they are for

Four by eight is the whole market. Everything else is a solution to a specific problem: 4x9 and 4x10 exist so nine and ten foot walls can be sheathed without a horizontal seam, 4x12 turns up in commercial drywall and long roof runs, and 5x5 is the Baltic birch format, sold in millimetre thicknesses and used for jigs, drawer boxes and casework where the void-free core matters more than the outside dimension. Handy panels at 2x4 cost far more per square foot but fit in a car.

Nominal thickness lies here too, though less dramatically than with lumber. A sheet sold as 3/4 inch is usually 23/32, and 1/2 inch is 15/32. The difference is a hair over a thirty-second, which does not matter for sheathing and matters a great deal for a dado. Measure the sheet you have before you cut the groove that has to hold it.

Before you order

Two checks are worth the five minutes. First, sketch the layout at scale, even roughly, and count the sheets on the sketch. If your sketch and this calculator disagree, the sketch is right and the difference tells you how much cutting and piecing you signed up for. Second, ask whether the sheet size is the variable you should be changing. Going from 4x8 to 4x9 on a nine foot wall usually costs less per square foot delivered than buying an extra course of filler strips and the labour to install them.

Questions people ask

How many sheets of plywood for a 20x30 room?

Six hundred square feet divided by 32 is 18.75, so 19 sheets bare minimum and 21 with a 10 percent allowance. The layout answer is cleaner: 30 feet is not a whole number of 8 foot sheets, so a straight grid runs 4 sheets along the 30 (using 32 feet) by 5 across the 20, which is 20 sheets with the last course ripped. Order 21 and you have a spare for the sheet that gets dropped or cut wrong. For subfloor specifically, the courses must be staggered and the edges must land on joists, which pushes the practical figure toward the higher end.

Is OSB the same coverage as plywood?

Identical, because the sheets are the same size. OSB is sold in the same 4x8 format at the same nominal thicknesses, so the sheet count from this calculator applies to either. What differs is behaviour, not quantity: OSB is heavier per sheet, swells irreversibly at the edges if it gets rained on and stays wet, and holds fasteners slightly less well at the edge. Plywood is lighter, dries out and recovers, and takes a screw closer to the edge. For sheathing under a roof and cladding that go on promptly, most builders use OSB and price the difference.

Should I subtract windows and doors from the area?

For sheathing, usually not, or only partly. A window in the middle of a sheet is a cutout you throw away, so subtracting its area from the order gets you short. The common practice is to ignore openings under about 30 square feet entirely, and to subtract only half the area of larger ones like garage doors and patio sliders. If you are working in area mode here, do that subtraction yourself before entering the number, and lean toward subtracting less than you think.

What does 23/32 mean on a sheet sold as 3/4 inch?

It is the actual thickness, and 23/32 is about 0.719 against a nominal 0.750 — roughly a thirty-second under. Sanded plywood loses material to the sanding, and the trade settled on labelling by the nominal size. It makes no difference to a subfloor or a roof deck, where the span rating printed on the sheet is what governs. It makes a large difference to joinery: a 3/4 inch dado will leave a 23/32 sheet loose, which is why undersized router bits sized specifically for plywood exist. Always measure the sheet in front of you, because the actual thickness varies between mills and between imported and domestic stock.
