Everything starts with a square footage you actually measured
Lawns are rarely rectangles, and the usual mistake is to pace out the longest dimension in each direction and multiply. That overstates the area on any lot with beds, a drive or a curved edge, and you end up with sod you cannot use or seed you spread too thick because you were trying to empty the bag. Break the lawn into the two or three rectangles it really is, add a circle for the round bits, and add the numbers. It takes five minutes and it is the only input here that has to be right.
Once you have the area, everything downstream is a rate per thousand square feet. That is the unit the whole industry works in: seeding rates, fertiliser rates, and the coverage figures on every bag you will pick up. A 60 by 40 lawn is 2,400 square feet, which is 2.4 thousands, and from there a 5 lb per 1,000 rate is 12 lb of seed. Learning to think in thousands rather than square feet removes most of the arithmetic from lawn work permanently.
Seeding rates by grass type
Rates vary by species because seed count per pound varies by an enormous factor. Kentucky bluegrass runs somewhere around two million seeds to the pound and tall fescue around a quarter of a million, which is why one is sown at 2 lb per 1,000 and the other at 8. The figures below are the commonly published bands for pure stands.

Two things about that table. First, overseeding rates are lower because the existing turf is competing with the seedlings and most of what you sow into thick grass never reaches soil anyway — sowing double does not fix that, opening the canopy up does. Second, and more important: the rate on the bag governs. Blends are mixed to a target seed count and the producer knows what is in that particular lot. If the bag says 7 lb per 1,000 and the table here says 5, use 7.
Sod arithmetic and the parts that are not arithmetic
Sod is sold by the square foot, cut into pieces, and stacked on pallets, and all three units matter. The common slab is 16 inches by 6 feet, which is 8 square feet, but 2 by 5 foot pieces and small 16 by 45 inch slabs are all in circulation, and pallet coverage ranges from around 400 to 700 square feet between growers. Ask which of those you are buying before you convert a price per square foot into a delivered total.
The waste allowance covers cutting. Every curve, every bed edge and every path means a piece cut to fit with an offcut too small to use elsewhere, and offcuts do not keep. A plain rectangle of lawn wastes almost nothing; a front garden with an island bed, a curved drive and a footpath will lose ten to fifteen percent to the knife. What the allowance does not cover is grading, because sod laid over lumps sets the lumps permanently, and no amount of extra sod fixes that after the fact.
The comparison that people get backwards
Priced as materials, seed wins by a mile — often five or ten to one. That comparison is real but incomplete, and the incompleteness runs both ways rather than in sod's favour alone.
Seed's hidden cost is the establishment window. Three weeks of keeping the surface damp, no traffic across it, weeds germinating alongside the grass with nothing you can safely spray, and a full season before it is a lawn you would host anything on. Miss a couple of hot days at the wrong moment and you are buying seed again. Sod's hidden costs are delivery, the labour of laying it, and its perishability — it is a live crop with a shelf life measured in days, and a pallet that sits in the sun over a weekend is compost. Neither is the obvious answer. What usually decides it is the season, the slope, and whether you can water on a schedule.
What this does not tell you
It does not choose your grass. Species suitability is a climate and site question — sun hours, traffic, soil, irrigation, and which side of the cool-season and warm-season line you live on — and getting it wrong means a lawn that fights you every year regardless of how carefully you calculated the pounds. Nor does it cover soil preparation, which does more to determine the outcome than either the seed or the sod does. A soil test before you start is cheap and tells you things no calculator can.
Questions people ask
How many square feet is a pallet of sod?
Usually 400 to 700, and there is no standard. Growers cut to different slab sizes and stack different counts, so the only reliable answer is the one from the farm or garden centre you are actually buying from. Ask for two numbers when you order: square feet per pallet and square feet per piece. With 8 sq ft slabs on a 450 sq ft pallet you are getting about 56 pieces; the same pallet coverage in 10 sq ft slabs is 45 pieces. Convert everything to square feet before you compare prices, because a price per pallet is meaningless without the coverage.
How much grass seed do I need for 1,000 square feet?
Between a quarter of a pound and ten pounds depending entirely on the species, which is why there is no single answer worth memorising. Centipede goes down at a quarter pound per 1,000. Kentucky bluegrass is 2 to 3. A tall fescue lawn is 6 to 10. Bermuda from hulled seed is 1 to 2. Overseeding into existing turf runs at roughly half to two-thirds of the new-seeding rate for the same grass. Check the bag before you spread — the producer set a rate for that specific blend and seed lot, and it beats any table including this one.
Can I lay sod over an existing lawn?
You can physically place it there, and it is a bad idea. Sod needs root contact with soil, and a layer of existing thatch and grass between the sod and the ground holds moisture, decomposes, and leaves the new roots sitting in a spongy interface they never grow through. The result is turf that looks fine for six weeks and then peels up in sheets in the first dry spell. Kill or strip the old turf, cultivate or at least scarify the surface, grade it, and lay onto soil. It is also worth noting that sod adds an inch or so of height, which matters where the lawn meets a path, a driveway or a doorway.
When is the best time to seed a lawn?
For cool-season grasses — bluegrass, fescues, ryegrass — late summer into early autumn is the strongest window nearly everywhere they grow, because the soil is still warm enough for fast germination while air temperatures are falling and weed competition is easing. Spring seeding works but puts young grass into summer with a shallow root system, alongside a full season of annual weeds. Warm-season grasses are the reverse: they want late spring into early summer, once soil temperatures are genuinely up. Sod is far less fussy about timing than seed and can go down through most of the growing season, provided you can water it.
