The pattern repeat, worked all the way through

This is the number that makes wallpaper estimates wrong, and it is not complicated once someone writes it down.

Wallpaper hangs in vertical strips, called drops. Every drop has to have the pattern at the same height as the drop beside it, or the motifs march up and down the wall. To make that happen you cannot start a strip wherever the last one ended. You have to start it at the same point in the pattern, which means cutting the roll at a whole number of repeats.

Take a 96 inch wall and a 20 inch repeat, and ignore trim for the moment. The paper you need on the wall is 96 inches. But 96 is not a multiple of 20 — four repeats is 80 inches, which is too short, and five repeats is 100 inches. So you cut every strip at 100 inches and throw away 4 inches. Not once. Every single drop.

Now the roll. A standard European roll is 33 feet, which is 396 inches. At 100 inches per strip you get three strips per roll, using 300 inches, and 96 inches is left over — nearly a quarter of the roll, unusable, because it is four inches short of another drop. The area arithmetic says a 33 foot by 20.5 inch roll is 56 square feet and a 96 inch drop is 13.7 square feet, so four drops per roll. The real answer is three. That is a 33 percent error, and it is why the area method comes out short.

Change one variable and watch it move. Same wall, a 4 inch repeat: cut length rounds to 96 inches, four strips per roll, no waste. Same wall, a 25 inch repeat: cut length is 100 inches again, still three per roll. Same 20 inch repeat but a 108 inch wall: cut length rounds to 120 inches, and now you get three strips with 36 inches left, or on a 9 foot wall with trim you may drop to two. The relationship is not smooth — it steps. A wall an inch taller can cost you a whole strip per roll.

Straight match, half drop, and free match

Three kinds of match, and they behave differently.

The half-drop deduction used here is an approximation and deserves to be called one. In practice you hang a half-drop from two rolls at once — odd drops from roll A, even drops from roll B — so the offset does not cost you on every strip, only where it falls badly against the end of a roll. The half-repeat-per-roll figure is a reasonable average. If the job is large or the paper is expensive, cut lengths on paper first and count exactly.

One thing no calculator can adjust for: on a straight match the label repeat is the vertical distance between identical motifs, and on some papers the manufacturer states a repeat that assumes the horizontal offset is already accounted for. Read the label rather than assuming.

Roll sizes, and the double roll confusion

American wallpaper is priced by the single roll and sold by the double roll, which means the price you see may be half the price you pay, and the coverage you are quoted may be for a unit you cannot buy. European papers are sold as one roll, 10.05 metres by 53 centimetres, which is 33 feet by 20.5 inches, and there is no ambiguity. Before ordering, confirm three numbers: the length of the roll you will actually receive, its width, and the repeat. The calculator needs exactly those three and nothing else about the packaging.

Roll width also matters more than it looks. It sets the strip count directly: a 52 foot perimeter is 624 inches, which is 31 strips at 20.5 inches wide and 24 strips at 27 inches. Wider paper is fewer seams as well as fewer strips, which is a hanging advantage independently of the arithmetic.

Order it all at once, and order it wrong on the generous side

Wallpaper is printed in dye lots and the shade varies between them by an amount that is small on the sample card and obvious on a wall. Every roll for a room should come from one batch, and the batch number is printed on the label — check it when the order arrives rather than when you run out. This is the single reason to over-order rather than under-order, and it is stronger than the usual cost argument. An extra roll costs one roll. A short order costs a visible seam where the batches meet, or repapering the wall.

Two practical additions the arithmetic does not cover. Keep a full strip's worth of offcut for repairs, because a torn patch is fixed by pasting a matched piece over the damage and double-cutting through both layers, and that needs paper from the same lot. And if the walls are anything other than plumb, square and smoothly lined, add a strip: out-of-plumb walls force you to trim more off each drop to keep the pattern vertical, and old plaster eats paper in ways that no calculation predicts.

Questions people ask

How many rolls of wallpaper for a 12 by 14 room?

The perimeter is 52 feet, or 624 inches, which is 31 strips at a 20.5 inch roll width before any deduction for openings. With a 96 inch ceiling, 4 inches of trim allowance and a 20 inch repeat, each strip is cut at 100 inches and a 33 foot roll yields three strips with 96 inches wasted. Thirty-one strips at three per roll is 11 rolls. Take half credit for one door and two windows and the strip count drops to 28, which is 10 rolls. The repeat only changes the answer when it pushes the cut length past a divisor of the roll length: at a 30 inch repeat the same wall cuts at 120 inches, still three per roll, but a 108 inch ceiling with that repeat cuts at 120 as well and a 10 foot ceiling would cut at 150 and drop you to two strips per roll, taking the same room to 14 rolls.

Why does the shop say I need fewer rolls than this?

Usually because they are dividing square footage by the coverage printed on the roll, which ignores the repeat entirely and ignores that partial strips cannot be used. That method is right only for a free-match paper. Ask whether their figure accounts for the pattern repeat and the wall height. If it does not, and your paper has a repeat over about 6 inches, their number is likely low by 10 to 30 percent. The other common gap is that they are quoting single rolls where you will be buying double rolls, or the reverse.

Should I deduct doors and windows?

Partly. The instinct is to subtract the full opening area, and that consistently under-orders. The strip that runs beside a door is still cut to full height, hung, and trimmed around the frame, and the piece above the door usually cannot be reused because the pattern would not align. Half credit for ordinary doors and windows is close to what happens in practice. Full deduction is defensible only for genuinely large openings — a wide picture window, a set of patio doors — where there is real wall you are not papering. For a small room with one door, the safest choice is no deduction at all.

What is the trim allowance for, and can I reduce it?

It covers cutting the paper to the ceiling line at the top and the baseboard at the bottom, plus the fact that neither of those lines is straight in a real house. Two inches at each end, four total, is the normal working figure and it is what the default uses. You can reduce it on a new-build with a laser-straight ceiling line and a machine-cut floor. Do not reduce it in an old house — plaster ceilings dip an inch across a room and you will need the paper. Note that the trim allowance goes in before the repeat rounding, so on some combinations adding trim costs you nothing at all: if a 96 inch wall already rounds up to 100 inches with a 20 inch repeat, the 4 inches of trim comes out of paper you were throwing away regardless.
